Back in the day...

Today we visited the RV/MH Hall of Fame and Museum in Elkhart, IN. This was one of those token stops where we were going to be in the area, we could spend the night in their parking lot for free, and if we're going to be driving around pulling a travel trailer for the next xx-years it might be cool to see where the whole RV/trailer/camper thing started. Well...it was!!! The ingenuity, creativity, engineering and the foresight that was involved was remarkable. We expected the interiors from the earlier models to be quite primitive or barren, but it was anything but! They had couches and desks and beds and toilets and cooktops and refrigerators (often times the size of the ones they had in their homes). The fact that most of the interiors were wooden was amazing and the craftsmanship of the wooden interiors was literally jaw-dropping!

Some of the decor in the big motor homes was what I think of as 70's (insert gold, orange, olive green flower patterns here...). It was really neat to be able to walk around inside and the tent trailers took me back to happy memories of camping when we were kids.

There was a 1916 "telescoping apartment" that you hitched onto your roadster that was - BLEEPIN' INGENIOUS!! (I will include the picture of the info placquet that you can hopefully read to get what I mean).

Penny snoozed away in the truck while we toured the museum and then THOROUGHLY enjoyed our family walk around the perimeter of the parking lot afterwards. This place sits on a major plot of land - MUCH bigger than the basketball and baseball HOF's (which you all know that we can speak to!). We walked around the edge of the parking lot so she could have access to grass, but our girl likes pavement and trotted around quite happily, had a bunch of zoomies in celebration, and was happy to hear about our thoughts on the museum. We then settled in for our dinner that Karl cooked last night in the InstaPot (crock pot) of pinto beans, mixed veggies, italian sausage meat, onions, garlic, tomatoes. Delicious din din that we will be able to have more of this week as we stay at a bunch of one night places with no electricity/water hook ups.

All in all - an exceptional adventure today!
