So despite walking the rim all but 2 of the 16 days we were at the Grand Canyon, we only went to the rim twice for sunset and once for sunrise. You see, usually after walking/hiking in the high heat for the day we were ready to relax and not schlepp somewhere to see the sunset...but you sort of kind of HAD TO!!!! Penny came with us on our first sunset adventure and immediately knew that this was something special! To be fair - this was her first trip to the canyon rim, so I'm pretty sure it was more what she was smelling that had her all sorts of excited! During our second week at The Grand Canyon (South Rim) our friend Linda (aka "Dearie") joined us so was with us for our second sunset as well as our big sunrise adventure. The cover photo for this post is from sunrise and I have separated the pics out for each event (although both sunsets are combined). And to be honest - I took a gazillion pictures but they all look close to the same and I am limited in how many pics I can upload per post here - so I hope these give you an inkling of the GRAND experience...
Our sunrise adventure was sincerely an adventure. I was staying with Dearie in her room so at dinner at the trailer with Karl the night before we planned our big Sunrise Departure Plan. We would pick up Karl at the campground (about 3/4 mile from our Lodge room) at 3:45AM and drive into The Village so that we could be at the bus stop that would take us to Hopi Point (our sunrise viewpoint destination) promptly when the shuttle started at 4AM. Sunrise was to be at 5:13AM and we didn't want to miss a moment of the process! We were at the bus stop on time, but unfortunately the bus itself didn't arrive until 4:27AM (due to a big staff shortage of 17 bus drivers). Luckily, the place where we were hopping on the bus was ON the rim so we stood there (and paced) while getting to watch Mother Nature at work! We couldn't believe we could see the moon and some stars when we arrived - it was waaaayyyy cool and we were, as I like to say, IN THE FRONT ROW!!!! It was awesome.
*EDITOR'S NOTE: All these pics are from our South Rim of The Grand Canyon adventure - where we were from 6/15-7/1/22...Karl and I also went to The North Rim (which is a 4.5hr drive from the South Rim) where we stayed at a campground in the area for 5 days.
